Meet Ernest!

Ernest is an approximately 12-year-old mixed-breed dog with a story of survival, resilience, and second chances.

In January 2026, Ernest was one of about 80 dogs seized from a large hoarding case in Arizona. Two of his former companions, Jessie and Tony, also now call Lucky Ones Ranch home.

When we traveled to Pima Animal Care Center in March to rescue Jessie, an Animal Protection Officer asked if we could also take Ernest. As much as we wanted to, we simply didn't have the time or resources to bring home another dog during that trip. It was a heartbreaking decision.

Then, at the end of May, something unexpected happened. While on a walk with a dedicated Pima Animal Care Center volunteer, Ernest became frightened, slipped away, and disappeared into Tucson.

For 40 long days, this scared senior dog survived on his own.

We followed his story from California, hoping and praying he would be found safe. We promised ourselves that if he was found, we'd make the trip back to Arizona to bring him home.That promise became a reality.

Today, Ernest is finally safe at Lucky Ones Ranch.

Like Jessie and Tony, Ernest is extremely shy and frightened. Everything about this new life is overwhelming. He isn't ready to trust people yet, and that's okay. We'll let him move at his own pace, showing him patience, kindness, and unconditional love every step of the way.

One thing we do know is that Ernest has severe dental disease and is in need of a dental procedure to relieve the pain in his mouth and improve his quality of life.
