Honey

NIGERIAN DWARF GOAT

Meet Honey, the resilient daughter of Feather, an Alpine goat who endured the harrowing aftermath of the Camp Fire. Feather tried to jump through the flames to escape, but ended up being burned over most of her body. We rehabbed Feather after she was discharged from UC Davis. Feather ended up losing her ears and her bottom lip was permanently disfigured. Months after the fire, a citizen noticed a small herd of goats grazing dangerously near the highway. Their picture was posted on FB in hopes their owner would see it. Turns out their owner abandoned them after the fire.

Our friend, Jim, who had sold the goats a few years prior, traveled back up to Paradise to retrieve the three goats. One of them was Honey, Feather's daughter. Upon reuniting them, Feather recognized her

daughter and the two were inseparable. Feather passed in July 2023. She was an old goat who also was positive for CAE.

CAE (Caprine Arthritis and Encephalitis) typically manifests as neurologic disease in kids and as arthritis, pneumonia, or mammary disease in adult goats. There is no vaccine or specific treatment; therefore, supportive care is indicated for affected animals.

Unfortunately, Honey also has the same disease. She has a severely arthritic front left knee and walks slowly with a limp. She needs a daily dose of Meloxicam ( pain medication) to keep her comfortable. Honey is a sweet goat. She is a little skittish but we hope over time she will blossom at the ranch.

We’re so glad that we have Honey and that Feather’s memory lives on through her daughter.
