From Momma Dog to Lucky One
If youโve been following us for a while, you might remember our momma dog Cozette and her two kids, Mariah and Gabriel.
Cozette was our very first shelter dog rescue, and ever since then, weโve always had a soft spot for momma dogs.
Because too oftenโฆthe puppies get adopted quickly, and the momma gets left behind.
So when we saw the Tucson story about the nearly 100-dog hoarding case, our hearts were immediately drawn to one particular moment. A photojournalist captured footage of a Cattle Dog mix momma dog giving birth as Animal Protection Officers seized dogs from the property.
In the middle of chaosโฆshe was bringing new life into the world. Weeks later, we noticed that that same momma dog โ Alba, the name given to her by the photojournalist โ was still sitting at the shelter, with little interest from the public or other rescues.
And we couldnโt stop thinking about her.
Around that same time, our very special boy Fonzie, who lived with Cerebellar Hypoplasia, passed away. Losing Fonzie left a hole in our hearts, and we knew that when the time was right, we wanted to rescue another special dog in his memory.
We felt drawn to Alba.
And when we finally met herโฆ we knew.
Alba became Jessie โ one of our Lucky Ones.
But Jessie came to us with more than just her storyโฆJessie has a wry, crooked nose, and according to our vet, she was likely born that way. It
causes her to snore when she sleepsโฆ and even when sheโs awake.
On our 14-hour drive home, I kept thinking Jessie was sleeping peacefully in the back because I heard snoring the entire time.
But when I looked backโฆshe was wide awake.
That wasnโt sleep.
That was just her breathing.
Our veterinarian believes there may be a relatively simple procedure that could help open her nostril and allow her to breathe easier โ something that could greatly improve her comfort and quality of life.
Jessie has a CT scan scheduled for April 22.
This scan will tell us how much her crooked nose is compressing her nasal cavity and whether surgery will help her.
We need to raise $2,500 to cover the cost of her CT scan.
If she is a good candidate for surgery, this could truly change her life. After everything sheโs been throughโฆ she deserves the chance to breathe comfortably.
We are launching a fundraiser to raise $2,500 for Jessieโs CT scan on April 22, and we are also looking for monthly sponsors to help support her ongoing care here at Lucky Ones Ranch.
As a forever-home sanctuary, every animal who comes here stays with us for life. That means when we say yes to a dog like Jessie, we are saying yes to years of care, medical needs, and daily support.
Now we want to give her something she may have never had beforeโฆ
The ability to breathe easier.
